Evolutions Revolution! A Progressive Guide to Evols Empty
PostSubject: Evolutions Revolution! A Progressive Guide to Evols   Evolutions Revolution! A Progressive Guide to Evols I_icon_minitimeSat Aug 06, 2011 1:08 am

Welcome to the Evol Guide!

This is a progressive guide to the new OCG archetype known as 'Evol' that will be updating on a regular basis until the archetype comes to the TCG. Feel free to submit your own build once you've read through this Guide!

Introduction to Evol's

A little trivia before we begin. The 'Evols' names are based on the world 'Evolution'. Each of the Evoldo's, Evoldar's, and Evolkaiser Raiga's tails have a 'DNA' strand running through them. All three archetypes are based around the idea of evolution, with it evolving from Reptiles to Dinosaurs to Dragons.

Evol's are a set of three different FIRE sub-archetypes that work together in a similar toolbox fashion as Gladiator Beasts. These are the Reptile type 'Evoldo', the Dinosaur type 'Evoldar', and the Dragon type 'Evolkaiser'. The main function of the archetype is to use Evoldo monsters to summon Evoldar Monsters, and finally Xyz summon the trump card, Evolkaiser Ragia.

The Evoldo

First, let's take a look at the Evoldo monsters. They are a set of FIRE attribute Reptiles. These are little monsters that focus on summoning your "Evoldar" monsters from almost anywhere. They're main flaw is that they are low in stats, meaning they will be big lightning rods for your opponents monsters to deal some heavy damage.

FIRE
Level 1
ATK/200 DEF/400
Reptile/Effect:
When this card is destroyed by battle:You can target 1 'Evoldar' monster in your Graveyard, and Special Summon it.

Okay, this right here has it's good and bad points. Given the condition to get it's effect to work, it's pretty easy. Set it, and you'll get your Evoldar. Getting an Evoldar to the Graveyard is easy to as there are a variety of good cards you could use to get them in there. There are two things that make it iffy. The first, is if it's not destroyed by battle. This can happen with mainly destruction (Torrential/Dark Hole/Ryko etc.) or with cards like Creature Swap (vs Monarchs). As well, there is always the chance you could be facing a RFG deck, or the Evoldar you want gets hit by D.D. Crow. As well, you can take a big hit from any monsters with 'Piercing' damage, as it only has 400 DEF.

Even so, it's purpose in getting out Evoldar's that have entered the grave easily. Run anywhere from 2-3.

Fun fact: This card's name is a corruption of Gephyrostegus, an ancient amphibian very similar to reptiles

FIRE
Level 2
ATK/500 DEF/1200
Reptile Effect:
When this card is Normal Summoned: You can Special Summon 1 "Evoldar" monster from your hand.

Again, a little card with a pretty potent effect. It can be used to get potential hands stuffed with Evoldar monsters thinned a little. As well, it works in combination with Fossil Dig, as the spell card targets all the Evoldar monsters. Getting around Bottomless and Trap Hole, and helps to swarm the field a bit. It has a good effect, but it's stats will leave it as a big magnet for your opponent to seek some damage. As well, it's a prime target for Solemn Warning, as if they have 2 chances to negate him (on summon, and his effect).

Overall, a decent card. Run anywhere from 2-3.

Fun fact: This card's name is a corruption of Odontochelys, the oldest known turtle to exist.

Quote :
Evoldo Vestro

FIRE
Level 3
ATK/700 DEF/1900
Reptile/Effect:
Flip: You can Special Summon 1 "Evoldar" Monster from your deck.

And here is your way to getting those Evoldar's from deep in your deck. Aside from the other two, this one is more solid. It has excellent defense for it's level, as your opponent will have a hard time getting over it without Synchros/Xyz or Monarchs (Cyber Dragon will also run this guy over) in battle. It can also swarm the field mid battle with either any Evoldar of your choice (especially Cerato). Aside from that, it has most of the weaknesses and strengths that Odokeris does.

Run anywhere from 2-3.

Okay, you can start to see what I mean by semi-similar to Gladiator Beasts, right? Being able to bring in a small assortment of monsters from the Deck, Hand, or Grave is pretty handy. Now, you'd be asking yourself: "What monsters can I summon with these Evoldo's?" Well, those, would be the Evoldar's.

The Evoldar

Evoldar's are a series of Level 4 FIRE attribute Dinosaurs that can use effects when they are summoned by 'Evoldo' monsters. You have to keep in mind, though, that they DO NOT gain these effects if Summoned in any fashion other then by a 'Evoldo' monster effect.

Quote :
Evoldar Ulcanodon

FIRE
Level 4
ATK/1200 DEF/1000
Dinosaur/Effect:
When this card is Special Summoned by the effect of an "Evoldo" monster: You can target 1 "Evoldar" monster in your Graveyard; Special Summon it. The monster Special Summoned by this effect cannot declare an attack.

Now this is where the fun begins. When this guy comes out via one of your little Voldo's... ALAKAZAM! Another Evoldar straight from the Graveyard! You could say, he's our very own Darius. Though, you need to be careful as the Evoldar you summon doesn't get it's effect. Even so, this makes for a insanely easy Rank 4 Xyz summon, as all it's buddies are Level 4. While it's stats aren't that great, it's utility in swarming and helping with either Synchros or Xyz is very valuable.

Run anywhere from 2-3 of this.

Quote :
Evoldar Diplodocus
Evolutions Revolution! A Progressive Guide to Evols EvoldarDiplodocusPHSW-JP-C
FIRE
Level 4
ATK/1600 DEF/800
Dinosaur/Effect:
When this card is Special Summoned by the effect of an "Evoldo" monster: Target 1 Spell or Trap Card your opponent controls; Destroy it.

Allow me to introduce to you, our very own Bestiari! This guy is a pretty good destruction card for the archetype. Since we don't like those pesky backrows, this guy is a good pick for summoning if you need him to clear a card. He's a MST that can be used a multitude of times. Otherwise, it is susceptible to Bottomless. Otherwise, he has the similar things noting of the other Evoldar. Good for Synchros or Xyz summoning.

Run anyhwere from 2-3.

Fun fact: This card is based on the dinosaur Diplodocus.

Quote :
Evoldar Cerato
Evolutions Revolution! A Progressive Guide to Evols EvoldarCeratoPHSW-JP-C
FIRE
Level 4
ATK/1900 DEF/1400
Dinosaur/Effect:
When this card is Special Summoned by the effect of an "Evoldo" monster: this card gains 200 ATK. After that, when this card destroys an opponent's monster by battle; you can add 1 "Evoldo" monster from your Deck to your hand.

Now, this, is our guy right here. A fusion of Stratos and Shura, with an attack boost that brings it on level with Laquari. This guy is the star of the Main Deck. He makes the deck full circle, bringing in exactly what Evoldo you feel you'll need for the situation, every time he destroys a monster. Even without his effect, he's still a 1900 beatstick that can really bring strength to the field. Like Diplodocus, he falls prey to Bottomless as well.

Run 2-3, always.

Fun fact: This card is based on the dinosaur Ceratosaurus.

The Lone Evolkaiser

Now that we've introduce our main cast, all that's left is the big baddie. That's right, Evolkaiser Raiga. While sadly the only member of his sub-archetype in the OCG, he is a powerful and easily summoned Xyz monster. This is, from Konami's perspective, the main goal of the 'Evol' Archetype.

Quote :

2 Level 4 Dinosaur-Type monsters
When a Spell/Trap Card is activated, OR a Normal or Special Summon of a monster is attempted: You can detach 2 Xyz Materials from this card; negate the activation of the Spell/Trap Card OR the Normal or Special Summon of the monster and destroy it.

This guy is an absolute monster. While only being able to use his ability once, it is on par with Solemn Judgement. In exchange for not costing Life Points, the two things it can't do is negate Flip Summons, or Spell Speed 3 effects. Boasting stats rivaling that of Monarchs, it is a worthy card in battle as well. Overall, a very lovely and powerful Xyz monster exclusive to Dinosaur decks.

Run at least 1, as this is one of the easier monsters to summon with this deck.

The Archetype Support

Now that we've covered the monsters, you might be wondering: "Are there any Spells or Traps specific to this Archetype?" Well, yes, of course there are! We'll get into those right away. In our arsenal we have a Continous Spell, Quick-Play Spell, and a Trap card.

Quote :
Fate of Evolution
Evolutions Revolution! A Progressive Guide to Evols FateofEvolutionPHSW-JP-C
Continuous Spell
When a monster is Special Summoned by an effect of an "Evoldo" monster, your opponent cannot activate the effect of Spell, Trap, or Effect Monster Cards.

Did I just read that right? Yes, your opponent cannot activate ANYTHING in response to the Special Summon of your "Evoldar" monsters. That means no worrying of Torrential, Bottomless, Solemns, or even Effect Veiler. Keep in mind, though, this only effects the Special Summoned monster, and not the Evoldo's. Keep in mind timing.

Run anywhere from 1-2, three if you really want to.

Miracle of Evolution
Evolutions Revolution! A Progressive Guide to Evols MiracleofEvolutionPHSW-JP-C
Quick-Play Spell
Target 1 monster Special Summoned by the effect of an "Evoldo" monster; It cannot be destroyed by battle or card effects this turn.

Yes, that's right, your Evoldar's get further protection! Now they can't be destroyed, period, for the rest of the turn! This is very useful in case of cards such as Torrential, Mirror Force, and Ryko. Basically, a decent protection card for a single Evoldar. If it could protect more then one, then maybe I would hold it in higher regard.

Run 1-2, three seems a bit much, but if you want to go for it.

Quote :
Suspension Bridge of Evolution
Evolutions Revolution! A Progressive Guide to Evols SuspensionBridgeofEvolutionPHSW-JP-C
Normal Trap
When a monster you control is targeted for an attack: Target 1 "Evoldo" in your Graveyard; Special Summon that monster and change the attack target to that monster instead.

Do I hear reusable Evoldo Gephiros? Indeed, I do! The lovely thing about this card, is it can protect ANY monster you control by bringing out an Evoldo! This makes better use of your little guys once they hit the Graveyard, as well as repeatable summoning of your Evoldar's via Gephiros. Overall, good, but not amazing.

Run 1-2, 3 if you really want.

Possible Tech and Support

Now that we've seen every single card in the Archetype, you may be wondering about support. Well, don't you worry, there are plenty of cards that can help these little guys! I will go over Monsters first, then Spells/Traps, then the Extra Deck.

Ryko, Lightsworn Hunter
Evolutions Revolution! A Progressive Guide to Evols Ryko%2CLightswornHunterLODT-EN-SR-1E

A nifty little card that, with Charge of the Light Brigade, can mill some of your Evoldar's into the grave. Essentially, it's there for milling and for extra destruction. Pretty straight forward card. Run 2-3 of him if you choose to.

Card Trooper
Evolutions Revolution! A Progressive Guide to Evols CardTrooperDP03-EN-UR-1E

Again, another way to mill some Evoldar's into the grave. As well as a way to make a quick beatstick for a turn.
Run 1-2

Effect Veiler
Evolutions Revolution! A Progressive Guide to Evols EffectVeilerDP10-EN-R-1E

That's right, the guy who can screw up a lot of plays with your Evoldar's and Xyz/Synchros can do well with this deck too. He can make for easy Trish when you bring out Ulcanodon and another Voldar, as well as his typical effect of negating effects.
Run 1-2, maybe side them.

Oshaleon (Credited to Zerochill)
Evolutions Revolution! A Progressive Guide to Evols OshaleonSOVR-EN-C-UE

This nifty little guy keeps other Reptiles safe. As well, he can make it much easier to add 2 of the three Evoldo's to your hand! Lets not forget, being Level 3 makes him an easier card to Synch with, and use for Rank 3 Xyz summons. Overall a neat little tech card that could do well in decks that focus a little more on the Reptile side.

Pot of Avarice
Evolutions Revolution! A Progressive Guide to Evols PotofAvariceEEN-EN-SR-UE

Given the set of milling cards I listed above, as well as the fact that you can swarm rather quickly, this card becomes live within the first few turns. Can especially be useful for putting back Evoldar's to be used with Vestro.
Run anywhere from 1-2.

Level Limit - Area B
Evolutions Revolution! A Progressive Guide to Evols LevelLimit-AreaBAST-NA-C-1E

Despite it limiting your ability to utilize Cerato, it does make things safer for using your Evoldo's and your Xyz monsters. Pretty straight forward card.
Run the 1 or side it, seeing as it's limited.

Fossil Dig

This can fetch all of your Evol's when you need or want them. Pretty straight forward as the best Dinosaur support Spell ever made, acting as their Reinforcement of the Army for Level 6 and lower.
Run 2-3

Forbidden Lance/Forbidden Chalice/Book of Moon
Evolutions Revolution! A Progressive Guide to Evols ForbiddenLanceSTOR-EN-SR-1EEvolutions Revolution! A Progressive Guide to Evols ForbiddenChaliceRGBT-EN-UR-1EEvolutions Revolution! A Progressive Guide to Evols BookofMoonSDMA-EN-C-1E

A series of simple cards that can be use offensively or defensively. Especially considering getting over some of those bigger monsters can be a challenge.
Run the 1 Book of Moon, and the Lances/Chalices are up to you. I'll have a better idea of how many to run when I do further testing.

Ultra Evolution Pill
Evolutions Revolution! A Progressive Guide to Evols UltraEvolutionPillDR2-EN-C-UE

If you want to further swarm the field after using up an Evoldo, then you can use this to get another Evoldar! Granted, it is a neg 1, it can be worth it if you really don't need the Reptile or don't have Offering to the Snake Deity. It's a somewhat devent card, but, I wouldn't run more then 1-2.
So, 0-2 depending on preference.

Offering to the Snake Deity
Evolutions Revolution! A Progressive Guide to Evols OfferingtotheSnakeDeityPTDN-EN-R-1E

Another way to more effectively use your Evoldo monsters. It can be chained to the summon of one from Suspension Bridge, and is essentially your Icarus Attack.
Run/Side anywhere from 1-2.

Once per turn, if this card destroys an opponent's monster by battle, you can detach 1 Xyz Material from this card to allow this card to attack once again in a row.

An easily summoned Xyz monster that can attack twice per battle phase, twice, should it destroy a monster. It's one of the few Xyz monsters this deck does summon easily.

When a Level 5 or higher monster is Special Summoned: You can detach 1 Xyz Material from this card; negate the Special Summon and destroy it.

An amazing Xyz that can be summoned by your Evoldar's. It gets rid of those bigger threats that you don't want to deal with. It makes it all the easier for your Cerato as well as your Xyz/Synchros to get over your opponents monsters.

Once per turn, you can detach 1 Xyz Material from this card to select 1 face-up Attack Position Effect Monster your opponent controls, and equip it to this card as an Equip Card. When this card battles a monster that has the same Attribute as a monster equipped to this card by this card's effect, destroy that monster at the start of the Damage Step (without applying damage calculation).

This is not that hard to bring out. You can do it in one turn if you flip up your Evoldo Vestro, bring out Ulcanodon and 1 other Evoldar, then summon a Evoldar from your hand. I'm sure there are more efficient ways to do it, but until I can properly test with Disgima, I will leave this section as is. I will update it once I can get proper testing done.

Has the same conditions as Disigma, but instead is a good way to draw, ditch potential dead draws, and set up your graveyard. It also has decent stats, being a 2400/2400. I'll let you know more once I do some more testing.

When any player's monster declares an attack: You can detach 1 Xyz Material from this card; negate the attack. When this card is targeted for an attack, while it has no Xyz Materials: Destroy this card.

This guy is pretty straight forward. A better attacker then Evolkaiser, and able to protect your monsters from attacks. As a 2500, it can handle a fair amount on it's own. Just be wary of it's effect when it has no materials underneath it. It could combo well with Forbiden Chalice.
Run 1, maybe 2 at most.

2 Level 4 monsters
This cards gains 300 ATK for each of its Xyz Materials. Once per turn, you can detach 1 Xyz Material from this card to select 1 face-up monster on the field that you control. Flip that monster into face-down Defense Position. During the End Phase, the selected monster is flipped into face-up Attack Position.

Okay, so this guy could very well be used to abuse Vestro, as he flips the monster face down, then back up at the End Phase! Meaning you could get up to 3 over the course of your turn, and your opponents next turn. As well, he is solid at 2500 ATK when he is summoned. Overall, a decent card and another easily spammed Rank 4 Exceed.

In conclusion, this is a decent Archetype that Konami has given us to work with. It's a lovely toolbox set with some halfway decent support, that makes for easy Synchros and Xyz summoning.
